Michael W. “Mike” Leonard, 78, of Asheboro, North Carolina, a devoted husband, beloved family member, faithful servant of the Lord, and friend to many, passed away on September 21, 2026.

A Celebration of Life honoring Mike will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Sunset Avenue Church of God, located at 900 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, North Carolina. The family will receive friends for visitation from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service.

Mike was born in Thomasville, North Carolina, November 6th, 1947, to MaryNell and Elwood “Wood” Leonard. He graduated from Thomasville High School in 1966, where he was proud to play football for the Bulldogs. Known by his high school nickname, “Stumpy,” Mike often shared fond memories of his days on the gridiron and the friendships and experiences that came with being a Thomasville Bulldog.

His love for sports continued beyond his playing days. For more than 17 years, Mike served as a referee, something he greatly enjoyed and took pride in doing.

Mike was an active and devoted member of Sunset Avenue Church of God, where he faithfully served as an Elder. His faith was at the center of his life. Mike was known as an encourager and a prayer warrior who genuinely cared for others. He and his wife, Trena, also shared a heart for missions and were blessed to participate in numerous mission trips through their church.

Mike loved the Lord, his wife, his family, and his church family deeply. He also had a wonderful sense of humor and a special gift for bringing joy to those around him. He never missed an opportunity to make a child smile or feel special, often with the help of his unforgettable Donald Duck voice.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, MaryNell and Elwood “Wood” Leonard; his son, Alex Leonard; and his brother, Larry Leonard, all of Thomasville.

He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 36 years, Trena Leonard; his brother-in-law, Chuck White and wife Janice of Salisbury, North Carolina; his sister-in-law, Sonya Dalke and husband Bobby of Asheboro, North Carolina; as well as several cherished nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Mike’s life was marked by faith, encouragement, laughter, and a genuine love for people. His presence brought joy to many, and the impact of his prayers, kindness, humor, and faithful example will continue to be remembered by all whose lives he touched.

He will be deeply missed by his family, his church family, and the many friends who were blessed to know and love him.
